A Crazy Rich Asians series will finally serve as a sequel to the movie. The smash hit film came out over eight years ago and every day since audiences have been asking “when do we get more?”
Based on the book by Kevin Kwan (which went on to have two sequels: China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems) a film follow up was long rumored but never came to fruition.
Today we can (cautiously) rejoice as HBO has announced they’ve greenlit a new series which will reunite much of the original creative team. Stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng, and Michelle Yeoh will all reprise their roles. Co-writer of the film, Adele Lim, will serve as the showrunner. Movie director Jon M. Chu and author Kwan will serve as executive producers.
While we’ve been down this road before the specifics of the casting announcement gives us hope for the wheels to actually be in motion.
When Will The Crazy Rich Asians Series Take Place?
The official announcement states that the series will pick up after the events of the blockbuster romcom, though how much time will have lapsed is certainly one of the top questions we have regarding the series.
None of the creatives addressed the time gap but Lim noted:
“It’s a CRAZY RICH family reunion! This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books. Getting to work with the original creative team with the support and vision of HBO and Warner Bros. Television has been a dream. Our writers room is humming and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with.”
