It was truly an event weekend at the box office, with the Christopher Nolan helmed WWII epic “Dunkirk” and the Luc Besson visual smorgasbord “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets”.
Both films are definitely meant to be experienced in theaters. While I felt that it was unlike something we’ve seen before from WWII films, there was a reason we haven’t seen a story format like “Dunkirk” before. With a cast of Fionn Whitehead, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Harry Styles, and perennial Nolan casting favorites Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy, I say lower your expectations from the hype.
Next is a love letter to scifi from Luc Besson. “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” is certainly made with attention to detail, but for all of the unique features, the story feels the most default. Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen and Herbie Hancock star, but it’s really Rihanna and Ethan Hawke who steal the show.
